if only Joppa Bridge could talk ...
In 2016 the State of Texas labled both bridges as "National Treasures" and both qualify to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Burnet County Historical Commission worked to obtain Texas Historical Markers at the entrance to each bridge. As of 2016, Joppa Bridge welcomes pedestrians and gatherings. The Russell Gabriel Bridge needs additional funds to create a safe and permanent pedestrian access to the bridge.

The small community of Joppa was established for a church and school in the 1880s. With the growing population in Burnet County and business generated from railroad. The county decided to construct several bridges over waterways throughout the nearby communities. On January 17, 1906, a bond election was held and passed to fund the construction of three truss bridges, including one near the Joppa school and church, the only one still standing of the group.
The total length of the 1907 truss bridge is 136.2 feet, with diagonals constructed according to the Pratt truss design, first developed in 1844 under Thomas and Caleb Pratt. The Joppa iron truss bridge played an important role in the everyday lives of many families in the Joppa Community. Traveling to neighboring towns to conduct business was simplified.
In addition, life on the river and under the bridge was a large form of entertainment and relaxation during the Great Depression and World War II. Access to education also improved with the construction of the Joppa bridge. Before 1900, young people in rural areas were mostly limited to elementary and/or junior high education. With improved roads and transportation, greater opportunities were available.
The iron truss bridge of Burnet County built in the early 20th century expanded the economic progress of the rural communities, introduced higher education to many young people and broadened opportunities, and also provided a place for entertainment and recreation for the surrounding area.

Two miles south of the Joppa Community Church and Center, and six miles northeast of Bertram, stands an iron truss Pratt bridge over the Russell Fork of the North San Gabriel River. On September 5, 1910, the Burnet County Commissioners Court called an election to fund the construction of two bridges within Burnet County. The vote passed and bids opened for the Oakalla bridge and Russell Fork bridge.
Land for the Russell Fork bridge was purchased from the Asher family, an active and well-known family in the Joppa area. The design and materials for the bridge were provided by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Company of Leavenworth, Kansas. The total length of the 1911 truss bridge is 102 feet, with diagonals constructed according the the Pratt truss design, first developed in 1844 under Thomas and Caleb Pratt.
The Russell Fork iron truss bridge played an important role in the everyday lives of the Ashers and many other families in the Joppa community. Traveling to neighboring towns to conduct business was simplified. In addition, life on the river and under the bridge was a large form of entertainment and relaxation during the great depression and World War II.

The structure, built in the early 1900s is one of only two iron truss bridges on public property in the county still standing. Beierle spoke about the project during the Burnet County Historical Commission's April meeting.
"We’ve decided we are going to put a committee together with Joppa residents, me, and members of the Historical Commission to get a plan together, " he told dailytrib.com. "Money is the question. We have to go out and ID some funding sources."

under construction
The Time is Now - Let's get this done!
We've been talking about Joppa Bridge restoration since before 2019
Two unique and cherished gems of Northeast Burnet County are our HISTORIC IRON TRUSS BRIDGES Joppa Bridge 1907 and Russell Fork Bridge 1911. To our knowledge, they are only two remaining iron truss bridges on Burnet County public land. In order to preserve history today and for future generations, they are worthy of preservation, restoration, and ongoing maintenance.
We are very worried that the stabilization of the Joppa Bridge will continue to take a back seat to other county projects, all of which are worthy projects.
However, in the meantime, our Joppa Bridge will crumble and become less and less stable.
Will we ever again be able to walk, rest, relax, gather on historic Joppa Bridge? Bring our Grandchildren to stand on history? share a coffee, hot cocoa, or ice cream with friends & loved ones on the bridge? in our lifetime?
JOPPA BRIDGE STABILIZATION PROJECT
Since 2019 or earlier, the Burnet County Historical Commision, the Burnet County Commissioners, and residents of Joppa Community have discussed the need for stabilizing Joppa Bridge so that it can again be enjoyed by residents and visitors of Burnet County.
March 6, 2019 post by Damon Beierle - Burnet County Pct 2 Commissioner
“ The historic Joppa Bridge is in need of some TLC. We will be assessing some damage and determining the best way to repair it in the coming weeks. The Burnet County Historical Commission and The Texas Historical Commission are working with us to ensure that repairs meet the standards required because of its historical significance. The damage is not deemed as major but we certainly want to make the effort now to fix it properly. Update coming soon.”
Please contact your County Commissioners - let's get this done this year!
